I just don`t understand why being in the band is so nerdy to everyone. In my school, it was pretty cool to do band and music - the nerds played chess and badminton and did things like Amnesty International. Maybe its an Australian thing.

Band isnt really nerdy in my school... all different types of ppl do it... the jocks, preps, nerds, goths... but its just an old stereotype that we play on... i agree that chess and stuff like that is real nerdy!!

In my school band is very nerdy!!! Only the geeks are in band. Some of the teachers hate band at our school. Our principle hates it too. We just went to State Contest and did really good, but none of the teachers congradulated us at all!!!!!

Band is kinda nerdy but kinda cool. I mean, during marching season. yeah........ but it`s just like the drill team. You work your butt of. All the staff appreicates people who are the school performing arts. Band and drill team/dance is very popular.
i mean, a lot of my friends are in band and dance, i`m just the yearbook editor, so i get to mingle in every crowd.

In australia. I guess the cool thing is really to be a BLUDGER (someone who sits on their ass and does nothing constructive which also includes sports etc. if your not australian and didn`t know the meaning).

So being involved in stuff like Band, School Newspaper and Chess and Debating etc. is seen as nerdy.

Recently i was on exchange to American New York in particular. One of the nicest places I have been to. The sutdents there are really into it. The attitude in NY was that getting involved in something is cool.

Some people think it is nerdy. But at my school, some of the coolest kids at school are in band. Nobody bothers us.

I agree that it is very hard to live with such a stupid stereotype, but really. Who cares? I mean, maybe not everyone is like this but practically 100% of the time i could care less of what they think! really, who cares! i agree with Matt.If u enjoy it, forget about them, kids who play instruments r sposed to be like 30% smarter anyways, also, it helps on resumes......ignore the idiots who say that!!!!!!

Oh, I`m not at all worried about it. Doesn`t bother me as I`m not in school anymore and I`m in 3 community bands now out of my own choice. We get huge audiences for privately arranged concerts (well into the several hundreds)which is a rush, I have a kick-ass resume and have made huge amounts of friends (including my boyfriend). I think band is cool, despite what anyone says. Its only non-band people that miss out on all the fun! I was just curious coz I`m Australian and its not that nerdy in my country. But it seems to be in the US. VIVA LE BAND GEEKS!

In my school, being in the band was a big privilege for two reasons. The first was that we were required to sit on stage behind the teachers and school prefects in assemblies and school meetings (in order to play the national anthem) which was great as you could stuff around and not have to listen to the teachers` and headmaster`s boring speeches.

Second, we got to miss some classes for rehearsals leading up to big concerts, assemblies, anything that required the band. It was a good privilege. And what was better, the teachers` just loved us because we were contributing to the school and therefore, our grades were always really good.

im relearning the sax and yeah even if nerdy wud love to be in a band its a extension to playing on yer own a group rather than playing on yer own all the time at least ita a extension of yer playing too so even if classed as nerdy is cool too ! being part of a team so is all good as far as im concerned.

i dont think its a nerdy thing. its fun and exciting. the lower grades that play at our school arent that good. anyways what grades are ppl here who go to this website?

At our school, the band is not picked on much. However, we still consider ourselves band geeks. Not band nerds -- what is that anyway? The geeks are in band and the nerds are really smart. And although I am a "gerd" (geek-nerd) myself, I really don`t mind. And although I hate to admit it, our band and football team aren`t very good. (Tomorrow we`re playing against a school that we haven`t beat since 1960.) But I`m still proud to be in band and a member of our school.

the reason is, well i guess, that the people who stereotype understand nothing of music and what a marching band really does. they know nothing.... therefore all they can do is stereotype. so be proud, cause you can do something that they can`t do.

hah! well i depends which band doesn`t it?????well in jazz band we r cewl but honnor band back up geeks! y because anything considered smart is nerdy
