Do you really like jazz or do you just like the way the word jazz sounds in your teenage mouth?
I hear some of you saying they like jazz cause they heard it on the radio or because they think it would be a good idea to learn jazz for the good influence it has on their playing playing.
I mean jazz ain`t just a background music that you hear in fussy restaurants. It`s made out of sweat, man. Some people gave their life to it; Miles, Coltrane, Duke, Shorter, Parker did it for the money but he did it. Jazz ain`t a language that you learn in shaking your butt and in wearing a hip hat, and in playing bebop scales.
I`ve been spending the last 3 years studying and trying to learn jazz, and I`m far to be a jazzman. I began listening to jazz music cause I wanted to go study at college and I didn`t want to go classical, though I have a great respect for classical music and enjoy it. But when I really got into it is when I tried to catch it.
As for some classical and contemporary music, if you wanna be touch by it, you have to sit, listen, and then, hear it. So if you say you like jazz and wanna play it, then get into it, go to its heart, don`t stay on the surface listening to xxxing Diana Krall.
