Hi. I am 36 years old and thinking of learning to play the clarinet.
First question...do you think I am too old to start? Most people seem to start in their childhood.
Secondly. I can play the guitar but by using tablature only. Will this impede my progress on other instruments or will I have to knuckle down and learn to read music properly.
Thanks for you help
Andy

Hi Andy,
No ......... 36 sure isn`t too old !!!!
I started in November last year and I`m 50yrs young !!!
It`s a struggle to get my old creaky fingers on them keys but I manage reasonably well !!!
I do know what you mean - most folk do seem to start in childhood - wish I had but for me at that time it had to be the violin and we didn`t get on too well !
Can`t help you with the tabs though - never played the guitar.
Good luck with the clarinet !
Let us know how you get on.

Sue

all that guitar stuff went right over my head (as many things do)

I, started in fifth grade, and i`m glad i did; but late starts don`t really matter.

If your in it for $$$ then it`s better to start early, but just for enjoyement, it doesn`t really matter.

Hey. Im 13 yrs old and am starting clarinet. Sure, most people start in their childhood, but hey, You are NEVER too old to start anything. As long as you want to play clarinet, then you go on and do that.

Andy,
Well it looks like you got your answer but heres another one just for good measure.
The worst thing to live with in this world is regret, I have been playing the piano for 1 year and have only recently turned 39. While I do catch myself from time to time wishing that I had started when I was a child, I didn`t and now it`s time to focus more on the fact that I am (playing piano). I cant think of anything worse than getting to say 50 and wishing that I had of started way back when and knowing that at that age I would have x amount of years of study under my belt already. I once met a couple who started hang gliding in their 60s, does that say enough?.

Hey I dont think that it should matter that you are 36! I am 13 and I have been playing for about 3 years, but i did it because i wanted to and because i love clarinet music. So go for it!

I can`t speak for Clarinet, but I am now 38yrs old and started playing piano when I was 36. The learning rate as an adult is slower than it is when you are a child, but I would encourage you to take this on if you are really interested. It is better to start now than to live a life regretting what might have been...

I`m playing guitar and clarinet and I know that tabs are easy to read for guitarists but, to play the clarinet, you don`t really have the choice to learn how to read music. I know that it can slow you down but you can try it gradually.
That was my opinion..

sorry for my bad english, I speak french
