We`re planning on buying an oboe for my son, who will start high school next year, since he will have to return his school one. There are SO many options in brands, features, plastic vs. wood, and no one we know can give us much help. Any advice for a high-school level player? Thanks!

The best thing you could buy your son is a Loree, that is if you can afford it and you know that your son intends to play for a long time to come (into college at least). If not, Fox Renard makes some pretty nice stuff too.

Hi Diane.

For the best advice you`ll ever get, go to the website of Martin Schuring, oboe professor at Arizona State University. The easiest way to get there: go to www.google.com, type "ASU Oboe Homepage", click "Google Search", then choose the second entry that comes up (www.public.asu.edu/~schuring/main.html). Then click on "How to Select an Instrument". You will not get better advice anywhere. Good luck to you and your son.
