Hi! I know it`s very individual and pretty much depends on one`s taste, but do you think it`s ok to write a piano concerto put use much fewer instruments in its orchestration (Because of potential lack of players and some other reasons) For example, I`m planning to use flute, oboe, clarinet, trumpet, timpani, piano, violin, cello and bass. I`m excluding viola, bassoon, sax, horn ect... Is it necessarily going to be amaturish?

Your right, the thing with composing music is that the songs depend entirely on your taste. For example, i`m a big strings guy, so my music has a lot of emphasised string parts. But, as for your question... The instruments you include for a piano concerto don`t really matter, because for one, it`s a "piano" concerto, and again, it depends entirely on your taste in instruments, and as long as the song doesn`t sound like a bunch of bad chords and mismatched key signatures, i`m sure it won`t sound ameturish.

i don`t think you should worry, you sounds like your pretty expirianced for your first peice, i`ve been writting and playing for 15 years and if you put the effort in, less instruments can be better

Definitely. I`ve heard beautiful pieces for all different types of ensembles. Any instrument can sound good with another one, it all depends on your taste.
