Since I don`t know how your band is run, I`ll tell you a few of the things I do as a sophomore section leader. Aside from volunteering to help the band director with anything and everything( and I mean EVERYTHING! I have used more post-its than I ever dreamed of) That will make your role as a leader more obvious to others. Our band also has Leader Meetings, where the section leaders and upperclassmen meet with the band director. One thing that I think makes a section leader respected is learning everyone`s names, and while making it clear that you are the leader, maintain a sense of leadership(i.e. taking roll in the section, figuring out who plays what part according to their individual skill level, helping weaker players) And since my band has section rehersals weekly, I made a roll sheet with my section`s names on it and I take roll during sectionals. While all this may sound a little insane, it works. As for marching, due to medical reasons I did not march this year, but that didn`t mean I wasn`t out with the band, I maintained my role as a leader and helped my section become better marchers. I hope my advice helps you and good luck trying for section leader.
