Im a freshmen (2nd chair) and I use a selmer s-80 C*.
Obviously, this is probably not the best mouthpiece, but beats the hack out of the mouthpieces that come with the horn.
umm.... mostly mouthpieces are from opinion, you kow, the tone that you want ect. but I prefer the C* because it gives you more and better tone, and is flexible to be either jazzy or classical or whatever.

try as many pieces as you can, i would recomend a rovener leg, i have one alto, tenor, soprano. i would get a rovner dark, i have one of those for alto, and tenor, and a light for soprano, i feel that the dark holds the reed better to my liking.

I use a Selmer S-90 for my alto, and I have a Rovner ligature. Rovner`s ligatures are basically a one-piece fabric strap, with a single tightening screw. I have been using it for 2 years, and it is suitable for jazz and classical. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it ultimately gives you great response from the reed and a sound which is second to none.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I use the s-90 for classical, and I use a Vandoren V16 for jazz.
