I have problem playing flute solos. I just get really tensed up when playing, is there any tips on how to relax or how to calm yourself down?

well I tried that. It kinda did the trick, but I think I need more practices in front of audiences. Thanks anyway!

Everyone is freaked out with solos in the beginning. It takes a while to build up confidence and play by yourself in front of people. It`s not really possible to pretend as if there`s nobody there, because the audience is right there in front of you. All your focus needs to be on the music. Don`t think about anything else while you`re playing. If there`s a break in the solo, don`t even look up - just keep your eyes on the page. That`s how I do it.

Just trust me when I say that it WILL come to you. You`ve probably heard way too many people say that playing an instrument adeptly and with confidence takes years of practice. This is TRUE. I would strongly recommend finding a good flute teacher. That`s the only good way to become an exceptional soloist, is if you have a private teacher.

Happy playing!

I`ve sang soprano for years and never felt nervous. Just this year I played my first flute solo at Solo and Ensemble and I was sooooo nervous that I hardly got the first page out. One thing that will help you with nerves is to be confident in yourself. If you know you can play the solo, concentrat on your tone, notes, vibrato, exe. Concentrating on playing rather than how nevous you are or how many people are watching helps. Also if you do make a mistake, pretend that it didn`t happen and keep going, many people appreciate people that can keep going. Practice playing solo`s for family and friends, soon you`ll feel comfortable in front of crowds.
