Which notes are usually sharp and which are usually played flat? Me and the other piccolo players in our band are always out of tune. It`s probably me, I`ve only had mine a few months. I saw a web site a long time ago that had a list on it but I can`t remember where.

It depends on the piccolo, the player, the volume, the air temperature, etc.

Any player of any instrument that does not have built-in tuned notes has to listen ALL the time and make on-going adjustments by the way they play.

This quicly becomes pretty impossible as the number of piccolows increases beyond 1! This is one reason why why orchestras seldom have more than one piccolo.

It is pretty well impossible for a significant number of amateur piccolo players to all keep in tune with eachother. So don`t let it worry you. If you were perfectly in tune with a tuner, then it would still not sound right.

So the imporant thing is to know when not to let tuning bother you. Save your concern for when you are playing a piccolo solo, with other players whose tuning is good.

bTW what may sound like lousy tuning in the middle of a band often sound a lot better from a distance, when all the sounds are blending more. Consider a string section of an orchestra, with variable tuning (as is pretty normal), and all busy doing pitch vibrato. The range of notes may cover quite a large pitch range, but the blended sound is good!

It all depends on the player. When I first started everything no matter what I did was sharp. Now I can get almost everything in tune. You just have not go through chromatically with a tuner and right down your pitch tendencies

Generally D naturals are flat if your concert a and b flat are in tune.
