That`s not what I`ve heard..

It`s a concern of mine as well. I`m getting mine off in a little over a week. I just started playing piccolo too, so I`m a bit worried about both. I`ve heard that it messes up your embouchure a bit, but playing long tones and practicing everyday should help.

No, It won`t interfere with you playing flute. My band director even recommends students with braces play flute!

I got braces whilst playing the flute - this messed up my playing for a while, and I found I got sore lips, but when they came off, there was no problem at all - I found it easier (not to mention hugely more comfortable) to play after that!
Good luck - and enjoy your new teeth!!

DOn`t worry you`ll be fine. I just got mine off after 2 years of only getting better on flute and piccolo. I had to make some slight adjustments, but it wasn`t anything major. YOu`ll be fine! ^_^

i`m gettin mine off in a few months.. i know when i got mine on i had trouble... and i wouldn`t recomend having an appointment right before band to get them on... lol not good.. let us know how it goes for you! from what some of the girls in our band have said is that its just different.. and try for an appointment at the beging of the week, not the end when we have a competition..

i found it a good deal harder with my piccolo..? will that make any difference once i get them off?

when I was a youngster (hah! Already so long ago) I had permanent braces for two years. I noticed a definate change in my sound, and not being as skilled then as I am now I was`t able to compensate very well for it.

Having gotten used to playing with braces and making the automatic compensations, it seems likely that you`ll feel very different, at least at first. There`s no reason why your tone shouldn`t be back to normal within a short period of time as long as you do lots of practise and spend some time getting used to your new teeth )

I can`t grasp why a band director would say you SHOULD play with braces in- I`ve never met anyone who said their tone was improved by having metal wires all round their mouth.

when i first started playing the flute I had just gotten my braces on. when I got them off, I was the worst in band. Now I`m, not to sound stuck-up, but I am pretty much the best.

It screwed me up for a long time. But your tone will improve dramatically.

hey, nothing will happen when you get your braces off. the same thing happened to me. I had braces and got them off in February, and it helped A LOT! it is so much better playing without braces. 8)

I agree with Jill about when the braces come off. You can allways adjust to braces just takes practice. I had braces for 3 years and started with top braces for 1 year and a metal expander on the roof of my mouth (awful I was in marching band and brocoli was stuck on the inside of it and came out when I played I almost threw up on the field) then both top and bottom braces and it did take some practice to adjust it is doable. I got them after 5 years of playing during highschool where I really advanced and was able to do it with braces. Now when I got them off it took another set of practice and adjustments but ultimately maybe just from more experience I improved my tone more i feel b/c I wasn`t concentrating so much on my braces. So maybe it`s in my head but i felt like at much more room in my mouth and my lips could relax a whole lot more (like i said maybe just in my head). I have small lips so even with that you can adjust with braces.
