Hello everyone. Anyway, I`ve decided that I`ll start saving up my allowance (I`m only 14 guys...) in order to buy an open hole Yamaha flute and keep taking lessons till then. I figure by the time I`m relatively good, I`ll have enough money. =D

But until then, I need some advice on making the tone clearer on the flute I have right now. Sometimes, it`s really good and clear and strong (and sounds just like my teacher`s Yamaha) but other (most) times, it sounds airy.

My teacher keeps telling me that I have to lower my top lip, but I`m not quite sure about that. Can anyone help me with lip position? And all other advice you have to give is appreciated. Thanks!

P.S. My flute teacher is also going to play at Lincoln Center in NY sometime in June. Try to make it if you can, it sounds really pretty!

There are others here who are no doubt very experienced teachers and players, and will eventually provide some answers for you, and also some very good links.

In the mean time, you may find a little that may help in the following.

move the body of your flute to the front and to the back while you are playing it. play with the way you hold your embrochure. roll your headjoint in and out. try all of these things and decide what works best for you.

i hope this helped!

Arak, I am a little confused by your post. Are you saying that you aren`t one of the experienced players on here? I like the aricles on the sax forum, they are very helpful.

I regard myself as significantly experienced in teaching many `beginners`, and very experienced as a multi-instrumentalist in pit playing, where flute (& picc) are the instruments I know and play best.

However I acknowledge that there must be other experienced players in this forum, who may well be a lot more experienced than I am, especially in their own field of flute playing. I thought they could probably offer additional material to answer the request in this thread.

I`m sure a lot of thought went into those articles in the sax forum. I know from discussion in the sax forum that many sax/clarinet players moving into flute playing have found them very useful.

Do you know of any other sites that cover the same material with perhaps a different approach, that would perhaps appeal more to doubling sax players who respond better to a less analytical approach?

I am sure the sax site would be happy to add other useful links.

No, I haven`t come across any. I mostly stay on the flute groups as I do not play the sax. I really enjoyed reading the links that you did provide. Great site.
