Play the oboe. Its ten times better. way more challenging then either trumpet or flute, plus has a more complex and beautiful sound.

Play flute and you have the added advantage of developing a huge lung capacity (this may also be true for trumpets, but *its* really noticable for the flutes)

I totally disagree with Jim. I play both the oboe and the flute and I think the flute`s harder!

Hon-
You`re on the FLUTE section of the forums, what do you THINK the answer`s gonna be?
I`d say play flute (duh), but there is more competition and a higher skill requirement. As my band teacher says, flutes are a dime a dozen, there`s tons of us. If you want to be recognized for being good, you need to work your butt off.
I don`t know what it`s like for trumpets, but I don`t think it`s as bad as with flutes. Also, their personalities are quite different.
Never having played trumpet, I can`t talk from experience, but I`ve been told by multiple people (who DO know from experience) that trumpet and flute do not mix: the trumpet embrocure will screw up your flute one. Naturally, it isn`t like that for everyone, but be wary.
Have fun deciding and exploring!

i play flute but i have always wished i played trumpet- trumpet is so powerful and yeah... it gets all the glory, too. i agree, you could go for both.. flute is harder at first but it takes a lot to become accomplished on both of them. trumpets are a lot more valuable in marching bands... i wish i played it!! i finally figured out the whole change the pitch with your lips thing.. i was very proud.

I like both. I personally play the clarinet. By looking at the flutes and my friends trying to show me how to play one, it looks pretty hard. Although both instruments will require a tremendous amount of work. As someone said, the trumpet would be alot more fun to play in marching band. The flutes are almost always looked over in marching band. Although, in concert band the lfute does get some awsome parts. HTH, it really is your choice, it depends on what you are planing to do in high school

I play both flute and clarinet. I think they are equally as great. I`ve played trumpet for a bit and I think the keyings for it gets repetetive. I think that the sound of the flute is much smoother and better.
