Just wondering if theres anyone who plays sax as a second instrument. Im having trouble playing `dirty`. As a flute player i naturally play sweetly and therefore when im playing jazz, funk and swing on sax i can get into it but i cant produce the right tone for that style, has anyone got any suggestions! thanks

There are mouthpieces specially designed for those `aggressive` sounds. Some reeds are better than others for this. You may need a harder reed and more `puff`, along with a well-supported lower lip.

I suggest you go to a sax forum where there is HEAPS of action and expertise....

is the home page, with heaps of info accessible there, with the link to "SOTW Discussion Forum" down on the left,

Tenor sax is my second instrument, clarinet is my first, and I have that problem all the time. I also have a problem with and air like sound. I`ve tryed everything, but I still get that air like sound. Any ways anyone can think of to help me not get out such an air like sound please tell me? My band teacher said I need to get rid of the air sound before I can join jazz band.

my best bet would be to put more air through the horn. blow harder.

Yes, blow harder - more air pressure, balanced by more lip pressure.

But are you using a good sax embouchure, with a fat cushion of lip under the reed, made by pouting before laying the reed on the lip? (Quite different from a clarinet embouchure, which requires a much thinner cushion of lip under the reed, and likewise different from flute)

Also, you possibly have an inappropriate mouthpiece or a reed that is too hard.

Try using the "growl" technique. What you do is make growling noises into the horn while you play it
