Okay, now for something really inconsequential: Do you keep your fingernails short because you play flute? Or in other words, does anyone manage to have long nails? If so, don`t they interfere with your playing somewhat?

I do not want to exclude anyone on this innane question, so.... feel free to answer despite your gender!!

Judging from the way that I`ve seen some girls try to manage things with really long nails, I can imagine that a quick page turn could be a difficulty.
AS a male, I generally try to keep mine shorter.

I like to keep mine as short as possible. I can`t stand having long nails. I have never tried playing the flute with long nails, I would think that it would bother me some what.

Seeing I don`t use the ENDS of my fingers for flute playing, but rather the soft pad on the opposite side from the nail, long nails would have no effect for me.

But if I convinced myself that they wrecked my tone, then that just might happen! :-)

um...I don`t think it affects flute playing but it canbe hard to turn pages quickly. I also play guitar so I have to keep my nails short.

I of course also use the pads of my fingers, but it seems that long fingernails would just be crazy! I suppose if you were used to them, but I tried some cheap fake ones once (dress-up time with the young daughters), and I couldn`t do ANYTHING! I may just be "glamour impaired"!

As I said...trivial and inconsequential!!

with the fake nails, it`s just like anything else you try doing with them.. it`s hard at first, but once you get used to it, it`s not a big deal. if you let them get extrememly long.. then it gets difficult

Cant say, as I have a nasty habit of picking off the ends of my fingernails (and sometimes chewing, but thats only to start the picking process). When I do get my nails done, though, I dont find it too much a hassle to play. Then again, I`m the most uncoordinated person on earth. Who else can break their big toe while tripping over a step? Or break their leg while warming up for a track meet? Or sprain their ankle while trying to stand up from a chair??
