Greetings all,

Ok, so I`m a rising college freshman this fall, and I`m going to be trying out for three of the ensembles offered at my school (Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Orchestra, and Flute Ensemble, if anyone is curious).

The audition requirements is simple: play two "contrasting" pieces. I only need to audition once for all of the ensembles, since I`m only trying out on flute.

The problem is, I have *no idea* what I should use for that.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have a little less than a month to prepare, and I`m running out of ideas (the only thing I`ve thought up so far is a piece of traditional Irish folk music, but I don`t know if that`s really a good selection or not).

Thanks for the assistance.

I would say either the Mozart Concerto in G or D would be a good selection for one of the pieces, since it`s really well known and popular. For a contrasting piece, I don`t know your level, but you might want to look at some contemporary pieces like the Burton Sonatina, maybe Poulenc Sonata, Mucyznski, or another contemporary composer (I don`t know many off the top of my head.) Hope this helps!

What level do you play at? I`d suggest one of Astor Piazzolla`s Tango Etudes, which would be a good contrast to a traditional classical piece, and hopefully won`t be played by everyone and his mother. Rhene-Baton`s Passacaille is another nice, not too long piece
