"a bit childish"... absolutely. Guilty as hell. I do what I enjoy because I enjoy it and don`t feel a need to act my age.

The worry about naming a flute just seems odd to me.

That`s the thing. It`s not a worry. Some do it because it`s amusing. Not having kids, I couldn`t say for sure, but I don`t think calling your flute something other than "flute" takes a whole lot of emphasis or priority from the kids. But I agree that if someone is stressing about what to name their flute, they have a hard life ahead of them. What`s funny to me is that many of the "anti-naming" posts--not yours--just seem so protestant (note the lowercase "P"). It`s as if those who don`t name their flutes feel beset upon by those who do in an effort to make them change.

As for me, I wouldn`t say I "name" mine. I mean I don`t converse with or personify my flute, but I call it nouns other than "flute" just to be irreverent or funny.

I don`t have anything against those who have names, or referrals, for their flutes. I just couldn`t quite get a handle on the original poster who needed help from a forum in order to name his/her flute!

I`m not sure I`d call it "childish", but, maybe just "not my thing". And I don`t think people are neglecting their children just so they can have a relationship with their flute!HA

To the original poster: How about Sebastion, Winifred, Cordelia, Alphonse, Benedict, Lucinda, Cecilia, Bernadette, Gregory or Gabriel!

Well, I`ve named all of my flutes, and from the specs of yours, I`d name it something elegant. I can`t think of any good names, sorry!

Specs don`t mean much of anything. They are making garbage flutes on ebay with the same specs. I wouldn`t call his flute elegant, it is an okay student-intermediate flute, but that is about it.

I`d suggest giving it a girl`s name, since the flute plays so high up there. Conversely, you could give a tuba a guy`s name, but it`s completely up to you. There`s nothing wrong with naming your instrument - it`s not stupid or childish. I know a few pro musicians who have named their instruments. Personally, my saxophone`s name is Rachel II, it being the second alto that I`ve owned (see the connection?? ). If you want to name your flute, go for it - don`t let those sexually insecure jocks badmouth you about it.

Cheers,

Thomas

We always name our instruments after inside jokes, so now we end up with instrumetns like "sexy beast, Sr" (ok actually he`s a flag), "Hot Tamale" (Clarinet,) "Eme* (Flute,) "Eugene"(flute again, and my Personal Favorite "Teddy Bear" (a flute named after a t-bone palyer, go figure) So yeah, if you have an inside jokes name your flute after them. It makes band a lot more fun.
There`s nothing wrong with a guy fluatist, we had one for four years and (most) of us loved him.
