Hmmm.... well let`s see...
I would have to say that my flute range is low B to whatever the highest note my head can take on that given day.

Vicki wrote "By top C do you mean the in the space above the fifth leger line, or something higher than that? I`m confused now, I thought there was no fourth octave."

Yes, we are talking about that C and the next few 4th octave notes above it. Beginners do not normally know about those notes because they are not included in fingering charts for beginners. They may look so scary as to put a beginner off!

This is my translation of Ali`s message for those of you who didn`t understand.
"Hi! I can only get up to a high B at the moment, but my flute teacher played a top C in my lesson. I thought that`s as high as you could get. I need to find out for my Gcse(?) coursework, that`s all."

Lol! Ebonics? Too funny! Where I live, which is in the bad part of the South, people talk like that all the time. It drives me crazy! THEN they pass it along to their kids!

I have a flute with no gizmo key or "B" foot.
My range is chromatically middle "C" to three octaves above that. I had to do that in 6/8 time for my audition for band.
I am in the process of learning with my private lesson teacher really high "C#" (the fourth "C#" after middle "C") and the D after that. It`s really hard....I think...
Has anyone ever tried overtones? They`re so much fun!!

-sighs- I love the flute.

I used to practice overtones a lot. If you blow half way between two overtones you can get them both to sound at once. I once got good at this, and played "You Are My Sunshine" in harmony by using only the fingerings for low C, C# & possibly D. Can`t do it now.
