I think that Bestler is one of those flutes that are sold on ebay.

those flutes have plastic covers for the tenons, meaning they are made of very weak metal, these flutes should be avoided

Deena, it is Gemeinhardt.

Yes, I would not ever recommend that brand myself. Cheap Chinese junk!

The post stating "I got a new flute" was not my post. It was a troll imitating me probably since I told him to get a life. I did not get a Bestler flute especially since I am trying to save up money so I can get a handmade flute (haynes, powell, muramatsu, or something of the same calibre).

The plastic (or, more often in the past, metal) covers are only used while the flute is put away inside inside the case.

The tenons do not get damaged while inside the case, unless the case allows the head to smash against the foot joint, as with some damaged, older-style Yamaha cases (with the handle at the END).

Therefore the covers have nothing to do with protecting the metal, no matter whether it is soft or hard.

So I don`t think the covers make a statement about soft metal.

Tenon covers are legitimately used on some WOODEN instruments, including wooden flutes (mostly from a past era) to cover the greasy tenon corks so that the grease did not make a mess of the case.

This statement made by the makers of cheap METAL flutes with tenon covers, is that the manufacturer knows so little about flutes that they do not even know that grease is not used on metal tenons! They are including the covers because of a practice only applicable to flutes with cork tenons.

Often these manufacturers even provide the grease to PROVE their lack of knowledge!

One interesting fact is that good oboes usually have covers provided, whereas clarinets do not. Why is it that it is OK for clarinet cases to get mucky, but not oboe cases?

Just thought i`d point out that grease is sometimes needed for a new flute. I have had my miyazawa for 8 years and still somethime need grease to get the footjoint and headjoint on. Although it does look bad to sell it with a flute...
