Why `switch` to piccolo? You can play both!

It is harder to play than the flute in that it`s harder to get the notes out sometimes as its so high-pitched and you have to adjust your embouchure accordingly, but you get used to it with practice and experience and generally it`s not too bad if you`re good at the flute.

I love playing piccolo, but definitely wouldn`t swap playing flute for it.

I just started playing piccolo a month or so ago and I have been playing the flute for four or five years.

My advice: Yes, you could start the piccolo, HOWEVER I recommend (you don`t have to follow this so all of the rest of this is just my opinion) if your high notes on the flute are not really that good, stay with the flute. I am probably able to play the piccolo fine because of my playing the higher notes well. Wait until you are more experienced. I think. The notes are pretty much the same, except you need to blow harder, and tighter embrochure. The fingerings are similar, but the piccolo is much harder (but it also looks good for various other things).

About playing both: Play both!! I have a concert this Saturday, and I`m playing both instruments.

I would not trade the piccolo for the flute (unless it would get me into my school`s wind ensemble or a famous orchestra!).

Hope this is helpful. If you have any questions, let me know.

don`t look at flute playing as just playing c flute, play picc, alto, bass, Eb flute, pan pipes, recorders, penny whistles, everything, these all help your playing in one way or another and are very useful if you enter the pro ranks

I like playing just flute and piccolo. The bass and alto flutes sound aweful to me. When I think of a flute, I think of light and higher piched, not low and muffled and flat sounding.

but you should give those flutes a chance, I have used them for shows often, and they are common in movies and a vital part of any flute ensemble

I've also been playing the flute for only a year.
However, I am in my school's top band (Middle school). The high school band for my district is nationally-recognized as one of the best high school bands in the whole country.
I'm thinking about maybe letting my flute-playing develop for one or two more years before diving into the piccolo.
As I'm extremely short, people generally say I would be a cute piccolo player. -.-
