And all of the half levels.

Are you talking about the fluteworld.com grading system or the ABRSM system?

If you`re talking about the fluteworld.com system here is their explanation

1.Easy - beginning, elementary, early junior high, rhythms to eight notes, limited range, less complex key signature.

2.Intermediate - junior high, early high school; range generally to 2 1/2 octaves, more complex rhythms and musical demands, easy ornamentation; e.g.: Telemann "Sonatas", "Melodious & Progressive bk.I".

3. Moderately difficult - High school, early college; increased demands in interpretation, rhythm, key, range, technique;
e.g.: J.S. Bach "Sonatas", Mozart "Concerti".

4. Advanced - College, conservatory; extended range; technically and interpretively complex, but generally written within the confines of traditional notation and performance methods.

5. Extremely difficult - Technically difficult; may make use of extended techniques or nontraditional notation systems.

Check out http://www.windmusicplus.com . You can see pictures of graded music there, but do compare pricing with http://www.fluteworld.com and http://www.sheetmusicplus.com if you see something you like at windmusic.

Sorry to ask this but if you don`t do grades how do you know what level of playing you are at and if you don`t do grades then why do you bother learning all the theory? I mean the only reason we even need to learn theory over here is for our graded exams.

Sorry I just don`t get.

if you want to have a career in music then you need the practical and theoretical stuff. i am guess it`s just a hobby for you so you don`t really need to (i do grades so i can say i have done them)

I guess because the US is such a big place and if someone wanted to try and implement a national grading system... good luck.

The ABRSM is actually in the US too, but most don`t really know about it. Yamaha also has its own music grading program here too, but you don`t usually encounter that unless you go through a Yamaha instructor/school.

Leph,

I think you misunderstood the original question. In the US we are "graded" on our playing ability by professors in a letter grade A, B, C, D, and F. A being the best and F being the worst. So, we are evaulauted on our playing ability through school.

The original poster was talking about the nationally accepted system for grading the difficulty of written flute music. In the case of music Grade 1 is the easiest or elementary piece through Grade 5 which is usually very difficult or has very different techniques in the piece. By different I mean stuff like...Singing an E while you are playing a C on your flute.

I hope that helps :D

No I understood the first post but I was just inquiring about how the people in the U.S. determine your standard of playing

Leprachaun,
personally I use the fluteworld.com grading system to determine what level I am at, that and what teachers have told me. I really wish that there had been a music level grading like the ABRSM (sorry if I got the acronym wrong) when I was in school I think it would have been very motivating.
