i play flute and just started piccolo, my middle school band director needed one for a compition this spring. my question is about the tone of it. I tend to get two tones, one like flute, but higher and another higher, sharper, solo like. i can change easily by just moving my lips slightly. this also could just be some beginer thing, but i got tone on my flute pretty quickly (like in a week.) could it be my piccolo, it is a geminiheart (spelling?) and well, its old, but i just had its pads replaced, as a gift this Christmas. thanks in advance for all your help.

It takes awhile to get a good steady tone on the piccolo. When I switched from a piccolo with a silver head to a piccolo with a wood head, it took me a few weeks to get use to the new embouchure and really be happy with the tone. Give it time, the tone issues are probably because you are new to the piccolo.

In my opinion the piccolo should have a sweet,dark, lyrical and sophisticated sound to it. The piccolo should sound like an extension to a flute.
