I now have a very nice Murmatsu DS flute and would like a split E on it. When I called to inquire, I was told that a spilt E was impossible to put on now, however, a high E facilitator (doughnut?) could be installed for about $50.00. Does anyone have an opinion regarding the high e facilitator vs. a split E mechanisim? I own a Murmatsu EX that has a split E on it and I love it. Please advise.

I much prefer the G donut rather then the split E. I never cared for the split E myself. The extra bar of it always got in my way and drove my nuts.

I owned a Muramatsu DS and had the donut put in by Muramatsu of America for $50 but was very disappointed when getting it back. It was just a plastic disc that anyone can put in and out of the flute carefully. I had to send my flute in to them and be without it for that, I thought? $50 for a piece of plastic is a huge rip off in my opinion.

You are better off sending it to someone like Jeff Weissman and having him install a silver disc instead. It most likely would cost the same amount too.

I was highly disappointed with Muramatsu because of this. They make such good quality flutes, yet then they cheap out on a plastic disc? It just doesn`t make sense to me.

IMHO, standard sensible finger positions do not go anywhere near touching the `bar`.

I would hope that my finger position is correct. I was told that it was very good when I had the chance to take a few lessons with a very prominent, flutist whom in fact studied under Julius Baker. Now that was cool, but a whole other story for another time!

Every now and then I would feel it that bar when I owned the Pearl, and if you are not used to it, then you it can be rather annoying. I just stay away from anything with a split E all together.

Don't get doughnuts go for the split e. The doughnut actually does more harm than good. I rented a brand new flute with a doughnut and the high e actually sounded worse than with out. Trust me split e flutes are much beter.

Fluteboy,
Please explain. What kind of harm did it do? It may have been the type of flute that you were playing on, or you were not used to it. Perhaps you just got used to playing on a flute with a split E?

Being that you have played all of 7 years and are an expert and all, maybe I could learn more from you.

wow y'all are really testy on this topic. I've always Had flutes with a split E so since I've never seen one without, I'm not certain what it looks like. Where is it on the flute?? And just out of curiosity, if I was so inclined, could I get it removed???

As with most things you don't know nowadays, it's easy enough to Google! That's a pretty simple explanation.

I haven't got split e on my flute and I've never had a problem with it.

No, not testy just sharing experiences and opinions. That is what a forum is for.
