i have an audition for a wind orchestra coming up and i was hoping i could get some advice. does anybody have a recomendation of what pieces i can play. i need a slow piece and a fast piece and i need them to be pretty short. im kind of new at this and i dont really know what the judges like and what impresses them and what they are looking for.
beside the pieces any other advice would be wonderful this is my first audition ever and im pretty nervous.

What is your skill level, and what grade are you in in school?

Although this isn't the best idea, lots of people use their honor band required audition pieces. Like I said, it's not the best idea and it's overdone, but if you're in a pinch that's a last resort.

it is a great idea for people to ask your skill level, in the mean time, play what you are comfortable playing, prepare something fast and something slow, that is what they want to hear.

and remember, be yourself, and you will be fine

SO, i'm practicing right now for a audition i have coming soon...and my pads are STICKY. Do you guys know what to do? the RIGHT CORRECT way to fix this small problem? I heard so many things but im not sure if it's right.

One person said to slide a dollar bill but another person said that could damage the pad. ????? and it's getting more sticky as a i practice. SO PLZ GIVE ME ADVICE FAST.
P.S- my new flute getting sticky pads?...see anything wrong with that?

Oh and yea, you should tell us your playing level. Well, if you're trying out for the Wind Orchestra, you must be good. Or could have the potential to make it in. I just think ppl who REALLY want to make it in, and work hard ...they probably are.^^ If you are REALLY determine. I know..playing honor band music is good. That's what i'm working on right now

They sell special pad paper through woodwind brasswind and flute world but cigarette paper works the same(but you have to cut off the glue strip or that could be disasterous.) I would go with real pad paper though; they wouldn't sell it if it wasn't good for something.

The audition idea depends on your skill level, and how much time you have.

Auditions are okay. I was nervous at my first audition, but I got over it. I have only done three in the past year. Wow...

Fauna is correct, cigarette paper is the best, especially EZ Wide, that's what I have used for years. Schoolgirl, sometimes pads stick on new flutes, or old flutes, from humidity, I always know if it's going to rain by the stickiness of my pads

I use the Zonda woodwind pad paper from Brass and Woodwind. Just don't smash the key down and rip the paper in it! LOL Do it a few times and the keys don't stick anymore. It will happen a bit during the first few months of having your new flute. Right before the audition use the pad paper and it won't stick during your audition definitely!

OH...so i need a special kind of paper to get rid of the sticky pads? Can't i use a dollar bill? that's what my middle school band director said..but i'm not sure if she's right. Maybe i'll go to the music store by my house. hope they have pad paper! I'm not ordering from woodwind and brass..yea. I have problems with that place. and besides i have a music store by me. so that's cool. THANKS YOU GUYS.

OH, SO if the enviroment is causing the pads to get sticky..can't i put my flute in a cold..dry enviroment, and won't the stickiness be gone?

well think about that schoolgirl. If you smeared a peppermint on your face and let it dry it would be sticky wouldn't it? Well, then put yourself in a cool dry environment, and voila! still sticky. LOL it really doesn't matter cause it will remain sticky for a bit. The Goldbeaters in the pad skin is really dry, so eventually it will moisten up a bit and not just sit on the surface and attract dust like it is doing now. Using a dollar bill is sketchy. There are so many people that have touched it (and not to mention the ink) that this would just gunk up the pads even more. Please don't use a dollar bill on your wonderful flute!

Hear! Hear! Why do band directors have to tell kids that!! They drive me nuts with some of the things they say.

One band director actually told me one time that people who double tongue are just lazy because they don't want to take the time to single tongue something. Lol!!! I just about keeled over with laughter when I heard that one and I think that he was rather annoyed with me.

*GASP* no dollar bill! i confess, i used it yesterday night because i was really annoyed of the sticky pad and it was getting worse..so i remembered what my band director said..and i slid a dollar bill. ahhh..stupid me.And it didn't help my sticky pad too. *sigh* that's okay right? i only did once..so..i dunno. LOL, kara. double tounging because you're too lazy or tired to single tounge? heehee. THAT's actually me because i double tounge my scales because i'm too lazy to single tounge. i get tired easily...weird.

<Added>

ahh.. i meant TIRED, not lazy. I could single tounge i guess..but i get TIRED too easily.^^
