So what do you all think of the lip plate engraving that I did? The pic of it is in my profile. It is nothing spectacular. I just have a really cheap engraver at the moment, so it doesn't do that great of job. That headjoint was just a silver plated one too, so it was harder to engrave then if it were solid silver. I am saving up to get some good engraving equipment. It is a lot of fun to do.

Pretty impressive! You are so much more adventurous than I am. I'd be way too nervous about messing up a flute!

Looks interesting. Has a sort of glitter effect. I imagine that's from engraving gold plate on silver? From the pic it looks like it could possibly be rough on the lip. (I'm looking at your sales page, as your profile pic looks like a piccolo headjoint )

No, it isn't rough at all. I engraved it first, then gold plated it.

Yeah, I just looked again at the pictures, it does look like it would be rough. It is the way I had to engrave it. I had to use engrave little dots to do it. Like I said, I need to get a real engraving too.

Pretty neat looking to me Kara.
Does it go around to the front of the lip plate? And are you going to do the keys as well?

Bilbo,
It doesn't go around to the front. I didn't want to obstruct the embouchure hole at all. I am not sure about the keys just yet. I think that I need more practice and I really need to get the right tools yet.

Schoolgirl,
if you have a steady hand and you are good at drawing designs free hand, then yes, you could do it. I recommend that you precise on a few junk flute lip plate first and not your own. It is very easy to slip and make a mistake. Since your lip plate is silver plated, you would have to re plate it afterwords unless you don't mind the engraving looking rather raw.

I just used a cheap engraver that I got for under $10 off line. It is really hard to keep it steady. I can't really say I would recommend using one. You are better off getting real engraving tools (which unfortunately are quite expensive.) That is what I am going to do and hopefully be able to take a few classes in engraving. I really want to learn how to do the different cuts. I have always enjoyed art myself.

I would be happy to engrave your lip plate for you, if you don't mind an amateur doing it.

"Precise," I meant practice. Stupid spell checker, stupid me!

excellent job kara. I had a question for you, but I would rather send it in an email. It is in regards to something you do. I will email it to you. Keep up the good work on the engraving!

LOL. I think that's really good. I mean say that you are a professional engraver, i'll believe you! So you got it for $10!! Wow, that's pretty neat! Why wouldn't you recomend me to get one of those? Your engraving is pretty neat^^. Oh, and i happen to be a artist with a steady hand! heehee Engraving sounds so much fun,..i don't know though. Is it hard? And if i try, maybe i'll practice on my friends 100 year old flute! lol.

Schoolgirl,
I wouldn't recommend one because they do a crappy job. They really are not meant for such type of engraving. You can't texture the design with it and you can't cut the metal at an angle either.

Kara you said ""Precise," I meant practice. Stupid spell checker, stupid me!"

The relationship between spelling and overall intelligence is linear to a certain extent. After that, there is no relationship between spelling and intelliegence. One could even argue that people who are more intelligent are worse at spelling because they can think of more than one way to spell a word.

I don't give a damn for a man that can only spell a word one way. (Mark Twain)

P.S. I think you did a really great job on the lip plate engraving. You are really skilled at making flutes look like pieces of artwork.
