For an upcomming audition I have to play an excerpt from Capriccio Espagnol by Rimsky-Korsakov. The excerpt is from the fourth movement and I am not sure what the tempo is. Can anyone give me an estimate to what the metronome marking is for this movement of this piece? Thanks in advance!

Hi,
The tempo for the 4th mvt as listed here is IV Scena de canto gitano and the dotted quarter=69. I have that MM tempo from two sources. ...but the important part of the excerpt is probably in the cadenza area where there is a nice flute solo and this is more freely played. I would strongly suggest finding a recording if you've never heard the piece. They are all over the place. When I play this cadenza, I pay attention to getting the low notes out clear and strong (Not flat). I don't think of playing very fast or rushed on this area but accurate.

Bilbo,
I just wanted to say thank you for being so supportive to others. It is rare to get a person of your knowledge and caliber on this forum. It seems like a lot of the pro players are on the Galway forum and the Flute list and couldn't be bothered witting on here. For that, I really appreciate it.

Same goes for our other professional flutists who take time out of their busy schedule to help on here. I admire you for that.

Bilbo,
Do you have any recording of yourself? I would really love to hear you play sometime.

Ooh.. have fun! He is such a sweet person with a big jolly sense of humor! Let us know how it went.

One person I would really like to meet and see in concert is Don Baily. He has the sweetest sound on the flute and it one of the nicest people too.

Did you get to go back stage and talk to him?

<Added>

He is such a riot to talk to. I only met him once, but I will never forget it.

What peices did he play? Did you play anything with Jeanie? She is really cool too.

Kara,
Supportive of others? I generally feel like a troll. I do like the occasional argument with good opponents like Micron
Now as for a recording. I can't stand to hear myself. I always pick out the weaknesses. After all, the definition of a "professional" is a person who gets paid for their work. I think of myself as a professional flute practicer and I get paid more for teaching this thing than playing usually, so for me the playing part is the fun part.
I think that you and many of the other regulars here have learned a lot from your studies of the flute and that's all that counts.

I never thought about actually meeting James Galway. His performance was wonderful and he is such a humorous fellow.

I'm in Cathedral City for a show today and using my PDA so writing is labor ed. Will chime in with the program and more detail later when I make it home if it doesn't already get covered by others.
