I am interested in purchasing an alto flute for myself. I don't plan to play it anywhere professionally, but would like something decent. I tried and fell in love with a closed hole Kingma at an NFA convention years ago, but I am not willing to spend that much money right now on a flute that is just for my own enjoyment.

I saw that Sonare is making an alto now and while I don't care for their C flutes that much, on an alto it might be a worthwhile instrument. Has anyone tried them? I am not opposed to decent used horns if you know of one out there.

Any suggestions for me?

Sorry, I don't play Alto, but if it helps any, my friend whom does play that was shopping for one and tried several and really liked the one by Jupiter the best.

Well it depends on your price range.

The Jupiter ones are very affordable and play pretty nice. I don't care for the pearl or yamahas out there. And if you have the bucks, the Altus or Sankyo (my personal preference) are quite nice.

Some of the older used armstrongs from the late 70s early 80's are nice also, but they do have a few intonation problems. But the sound is great, if you are considering used as well.
