Apologies if this has been said:
Well Lera, My point is that I'm not necessarily adding the A. I understand that the Gun is named after the individual who designed it. However, I copy/pasted the name from a web site. Many web sites have this named spelled with the A added. So, how do you explain this?
Perhaps this item is so endeared to the people that they assign a feminine gender to it inspite the fact that it's a weapon. hmmm.
I believe the A on the end is actually not a feminine ending, but a masculine genitive ending, making the meaning something like Kalashnikov's Machine Gun (Avtomat=Machine Gun). It's reasonably common in Russian. And in fact the wikipedia entry in Russian has the form you found Bilbo:
АК-47, Автомат Калашникова, «Калаш» — самое распространенное стрелковое оружие в мире.
