Joe B, the book from D.H I mentioned is the one I would take to the solitary island of the story.

It has everything, masterfully related, the music of Bach, the works of Escher and the famous theorem the so much shocked the mathematicians edifice of the 20th century.

It can be read in several ways. I prefer the complete one, although it may take a few months. It leads you to a quite understandable proof of the theorem, without losing consistency and in the way, it makes you enjoy it!. Amazing.

My edition is from Vintage books and dated Sept 1980. I do not think it has lost any actuality, all the contrary, it is helpful reading in this difficult time of religion-science conflicting entanglement.

Hofstaedter is (or was?) Computing Science Professor at Indiana University. He really knows what he writes about.
