Calling all Britons! did anyone take GSCE music. If so what pieces did you play for the practical and what was your final grade. I played an 'allegro' by Mozart arranged for flute trio and 'syrinx'. my final result was an A. Which was very unexpected.

Hey, yea i did! got results today, finally!! i got A*, omg, i really dont know how i did that, coz i messed up soooo much in my recordings, exam etc! the only thing that went well was my terminal task where i got 15/15! I only played 1 song on flute, and cant rememeber what it was !! i played 1 on violin and sax aswell though. wot genre did you pick for your performance pieces? i did baroque! lol!

Was yours with AQA? I didn't have to play a specific genre neither did I have to do a terminal task. Instead I had to do an Intergrated assignment instead. They give these things such complicated names.

Anyway Congrats on your A*

Oh yes but I'm still deceiding if I should do it for both years.
AS is going to be so cool because we have to study a Brandenburg by Bach and one of Schubert's songs, two of my favourite composers.
One of our comps. has to be based on one of the two pieces.
Are you doing A-level and what sort of thing do you have to do?

Ah, this brings back memories... GCSE music was a laugh. I did mine 4 years ago and got A*, then I did AS-level and got an A, but got bored of it and didn't carry on to A-level. Probably should've done really!

Well done to all those who just got their results!

I didn't do GCSE, but I did do Standard Grade music in 1999 and got a 1 (A), then got A in my higher and CSYS (now defunct, same as A-level or Scottish Advanced higher). Then I did a bit of my music degree but got bored and gave it up. Why have you so many exam boards in England? We only have one...

lol do you mean OCR, AQA etc? i think its because they all have different criteria and syllabuses, so basically you can pick which one better suits your school! i think anyway lol also i think some are more recognised... but not sure

I still don't get it. In Scottish schools there is one exam board with one identical syllabus for everyone. Seems odd to me, but then I can't grasp your education system at all...

I found Standard Grade and Higher music insulting to my ability, to be honest. You don't learn theory, you don't learn music history. In fact I have very little recollection of learning anything I didn't already know, by virtue of having taken private lessons. If you want to be a professional musician, school exams aren't enough. I know most music colleges won't accept you without at least Grade 8 practical and other, wider experience. Makes you wonder just what school level exams are actually FOR...

We havn't started composing yet It's all a bit theoretical (sp) at the mo. I'm glad I did my grade 5 theory before we started as our teacher doesn't explain things very well. Apart from that I'm really liking it

For our first lesson our teacher had us compose anything we liked just to see what we could do! Scared me! How many people are in your class? We havent really started the theory yet which im glad about lol but it seems pretty good! wb
