Hi, I'm a fairly new flutist, just started 4 months ago and I was just wondering how you keep the flute up at the proper angle for so long. I've been told to stretch my arms before I play, but are there any other ways?

Right. You don't play it for long. If you're really into it right now (as many people are when they first start something new), make sure you have a safe place to put it down. Play for a little bit, then take a break. Then play again.

I guess this begs the question, though--what do you think the correct angle is? You might be trying to hold it up too high, or not holding it correctly. Your arms should be at about the same level they'd be at if you were folding a pillowcase or a shirt.

this is where a competent teacher is so important, as is a mirror to practice in front of. It is important to remember that you balance the flute, not grip it, there should be no pain or tension in the shoulders or wrists or fingers or neck.

Also, make sure to always be sitting or standing up straight. You breathing is very important also.

Make sure your arms (and the rest of you) are sufficiently relaxed. Especially in the beginning, it's easy to tense up, which makes it hard to play even for as little as 5 minutes. My teacher was absolutely vital (and still is) in teaching me to ease up.It really helps with the endurance issue.
