Well intonation problems are prevalent with piccolos. They are much mroe difficult to play in tune than a flute, and nothing can really be done about intonation when it comes to the instrument. A good player, however, will be able to compensate for pitch using their air (blow up slightly to sharpen a note, and down lsightly to flatten it), so you can't really blame the piccolo for being out of tune, as no instrument is perfectly in tune naturally. In my experience D is often a troublesome pitch for piccs (especially in the lower registers). As for the airiness, this may be an issue with your embouchure or with the piccolo. If it's the piccolo, the only way to get it fixed is to take it to a tech. Have a more experienced picc player test the instrument. If it's still airy for them, chances are it's the instrument. If they don't have an issue with airiness, then it's probably you, and some tone exercises may help a lot.
