obviously my goal of making the flute in mt school a yazz instrument (XD) has to be dropped. I mean i do love jazz, but my teacher gave me a chance to be in the Blues'n'Jazz Band. She said i should play the BARITONE SAXAPHONE.
And yes I know its hard to play. At least I think it is. She did say that I'll start off playing the Alto Sax. Actually tomorrow morning.

You think a flute player would be good at playing the Bari Sax too?

Although, flute is used in jazz a lot school band directors seem to have a tendancy to steer students into the less popular instruments so that they will have a fuller sounding instrumentation. Think of this as an opportunity and an adventure since many of your skills about music can transfer to another instrument.

Yeah Maybe your right. I mean, don't most of the Bass Section of the band usually play with the Bass Clef? I cant read that staff as well, so maybe i might learn something new.

...?

I know quite a few professional sexophonists, and many of them, regardless of which sax they specialize on, can play flute as well. If you decide to play, it will very likely affect your flute playing (jazz doublers have a very unique flute sound most of the time...It's not bad, just different), so if that's a concern you might opt out. To keep yourself up to speed on flute you'll need to be sure to get in plenty of practice. I would vote "Yes." Flute players absolutely can make good sax players.

Awsome. and actually this is a Baritone. i started playing one instead of an Alto, and compared to the flute, it was like the flute was a feather and the bari was a rock. BIG DIFFERENCE.

Leras right, the sax almost has similar fingerings as to the flute, like G & A and maybe D.

And Nikki your absolutely right, im gonna stick by that advice.

Bring your flute along for soloing. It's much easier to improv on an instrument that you know your way around. Think of it as stealth flute Seriously though, playing bari in jazz band is a lot of fun, but can be daunting if you are called upon to solo when still a beginner/novice. Practice your blues/jazz scales on flute also so you can shine when you have the chance!
