Got your attention? Good

First thing, Braces. As you know, braces and fluting dont go so well together and im supposedly getting them soon. I have music and flute performance exams this year and im not sure how my tone will sound witha mouth full of metal. If anyone has any tips or exercises for helping out tone for flute players with braces, they would be much appreciated.

Second thing, I am IN LOVE with jazz fluting. Im around 7th grade ameb and am currently learning veloce from the Bolling jazz suite (if that means anything to anyone). I would really like to have a look at more flute jazz pieces so if anyone knows some good pieces around grade 7, it would also be much appreciated.

Thanks
Jess

The braces will affect your tone at first, but you'll get used to playing with them. Most people don't have any trouble beyond the first few months. The braces will change the angle that the air contacts the edge of the embouchure hole, so to correct this, try placing layers of masking tape one at a time on the part of the lip plate where your chin rests until you notice an improvement in your tone. Make sure not to let the tape lap over the edge of the hole.

There are two Suites for Flute and Jazz Piano by Claude Bolling. Personally I prefer the second. But there isn't really too much jazz in the flute parts. Most of the jazziness comes from the rest of the ensemble, while the flute plays over that. I am not an avid jazzer, so unfortunately, I can't give you any tips for other pieces to look for.
