There are tons of music jobs available, some of which pay better than others. Some principal players in major orchestras make as much as $80,000 per year, but then you have other options that rely less on playing ability, like working for a music publishing company, or running a music store, or composing, or more performance-oriented jobs like music therapy. Then there is the option of instrument repair or making. Music can be combined with most other jobs in some way, so it's really just up to your creativity to come up with how.

Music engineers can make alot of money. They're the people who design concert halls and other places people performand makes sure there isn't a bad echo.

While its great to have a job which you really enjoy, at least in the UK musicians are not paid as well as one might think - although better than they were. Most instrumental teachers have more hassle and earn less than those teaching music in school. Professional (playing) jobs are better paid but the field is extremely competitive, rarely a friendly working atmosphere and (in some people's opinion) becomes uninspiring after a few years because the repertoire which is most commonly performed is quite narrow. Of course, many of the hours are anti-social.

This suggests that having a broader career plan that performing/teaching might be a good idea. Be aware that vast numbers of students take media studies etc in combination with performing arts. Its not clear to me how many of these students find jobs relevant to their degree.

As an amateur, I can be selective about who I rehearse and perform with and be as busy or as available as I like. (As I play French Horn and Bb Bass as well as flute, I'm never short of playing opportunities).
