Interesting question, but I suggest we limit our replies to composers with at least a few works for Flute, if you do not mind...

Mine is Bach, then comes Vivaldi.

My most favourite are Bach and Chaikovsky.

Chaikovsky never wrote especially for flute, but there are very good arrangements of his nice and easy to play "Children Album" and "The Seasons" for flute (originally written for piano).

Andrei, I was reading a few weeks ago about an unfinished work by Tchaikovsky for the flute. Apparently the manuscript was scattered throughout the world, and until recently thought so incomplete as to not be worth gathering together again, but a team of Russians is doing just that, and filling in the gaps to complete the piece, which is supposed to be premiered either late this year or sometime in the next. I can't say whether this is just rumor or not, but hopefully we'll end up with a new piece from one of the great composers to add to our repertoire.

In answer to the question, though, I'm a fan of Copland, Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi, and Haydn, in particular, but I'm not too fussed about who wrote a piece of music as long as I like it.

Flutist06, it's very interesting what you said. I will ask our local flutisits in Moscow about this affair with the manuscript. Thanks for the information.

A tie between Bach and Vivaldi. I'm working on a Toccota And Fuge arrangement for flute right now and the way Bach layers everything is amazing! Vivaldi has a raw passion, though, in his flute music. *shrug* They're both amazing. Telemann is fun to play, but not my favorite (honorable mention?)

Well not all are necessarily composers of flute music, I favour these composers:

Prokofiev, Shoshtakovich, Taktakishvili, Borodin, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky....basically russian and FSU composers.
