Hello

I have to buy a flute for my daughter, and the tutor was recommending a "Jupiter 511 splitE" flute.

There is a chance for me to buy a second hand "Jupiter 511ES SplitE SP Flute".

Is this basically the same thing, and would this be a good flute for my daughter, assuming quality, price etc is all ok?

I can't find either flute on the Jupiter web site - but maybe it is just that I know so little about flutes!!!

Thank you for your time reading this. Hoping someone can help.

A split E is not necessary to have, it is more of a convenience.
I personally don't like them but I am not going to elaborate in fear of starting a long debate. If the high E is a problem then I prefer a G donut instead of the added mechanism of the split E. I would recommend a Yamaha or an Azumi depending on what level your daughter is at. Nothing is wrong with Jupiter, I just feel that Yamaha especially is made more solid.

Here are some reputable people who sell used flutes:

To answer the original poster's question: Yes, they are the same model. In the "511ES", the E means Split E and the S means Standard model. The "SP" means Silver Plated. It is the exact same flute your daughter's tutor is recommending.

You can find more information on Jupiter's website:

http://www.jupitermusic.com/flute_std.html

If possible, before buying it I would have it checked by a flute technician (or at least your daughter's tutor). If this is not possible, then figure that it might cost $100 to $200 or so to get it in proper playing condition. Of course, it might not need any work, but you never know.

Good luck!

From what I can gather, the 511 model has "hidden adjustment screws" whereas the 507 model has "top adjustment screws". There might also be a difference in the key contruction. For more information, see the following link:

I agree with Kara - Split E's aren't necessary.
Just like B-foots, gizmo keys, etc.
Good luck finding the perfect flute for your daughter though ;D

This is just to say thanks for the help. I have now bought a Jupiter flute for my daughter, and am grateful to this forum for informing me. I really didn't know how to interpret the flute name. I bought item no. 300083720071 on ebay.co.uk for a very good price: £79.37!

Best wishes to you all and again thanks for the interest in my situation, and the lively discussion. I also posted on another forum, but with no response.

BTW, we all have our opinions... In case there is any confusion, me expressing mine is not to be taken as personal attack on another person, thanks. !!!!

No confussion. There is a difference between an opinion and a personal attack which is quite obvious when done.

Like I said, it is OBVIOUSE when an attack it happening, but goading another person is a whole other story. You want to keep up this game... I can go on forever and you know it.

Sometimes no response is the best response.

While I agree with Abraham Lincoln who said, "It is best to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."...
...I'm not one to sit by and watch silently and keep my mouth shut! FORGET THAT! God blessed me with a mouth, and I am gonna use it. I don't know about the rest of you, but I love to exercise MY rights as an American. I will express my opinion every chance I get.

Quoted from Wikipedia:

"Basingstoke is a large town and third largest settlement in the county of Hampshire in the South East England region of the UK (after the cities of Southampton and Portsmouth). It is situated 77 km (48 miles) southwest of London and 48 km (30 miles) north of Southampton."

Are we missing something here or is this more micron language?
