My band teacher is all wrapped up in tone and I am deffinatley not the loudest flute in the band. She said that tone affects your loudness and that is what she is going by. We are haveing challenges and I really want to stay 2nd chair or make 1st even considering we have 8th graders in our band to. Does anyone have any tips??

loud playing is rarely the best tone, think full, not loud, the best tone is the most focused tone, that is the tone that projects too much, too many band directors go by an overblown tone that sounds loud up close but which dissipates as one moves farther away...

Patrick is quite right. Tone quality is not determined by volume, though to some extent, volume can be determined by tone quality (A Trevor Wye "yellow" tone can seem softer than a "purple" even if the dynamic has not changed). Try to get a nice full, rich, dark sound, rather than simply playing as loudly as you possibly can. In the long run, having a good tone is much more important than satisfying one band director with some....interesting...ideas.
