Is he using the same fingering? You could very well be overblowing. In fact, it's possible that he's playing quite a lot lower than you, depending on what harmonics you may be hitting. Try to angle the air downward more, and play with a slightly larger aperture to get the lower notes.

If you just started playing, like I believe you mentioned in your original post, then you're likely not used to conserving your air as you must while playing flute. Over time, you'll build up your embouchure to control how much air you're using and you'll be able to play longer without breathing. Just be patient!

Do not try to play the lower notes if you are brand new to flute.

Try to get a good learning book for beginners (short of a teacher) and do the exercises in the correct order. Your book will probably start with notes around first octave A. if you try lower notes without the right technique, in the effort to make them sing you will probably overblow and get the higher octaves.

The easier notes for beginners are between G and B. You will gradually learn how to play the notes higher and lower when you develop a good embouchure and get used to the instrument. Be sure you are using the correct fingering for every note. You also need a book for that...
