ok, today in band class he told the girl in the section that he might give the solo to another person....... well he wont let the people with the second part try out for it...... i understand that we dont do that..... but i was talking to this girl who also has the second part and she said that the first parts are harder music and that we are not talented enough for it.... well she forgot that the only reson that im in last chair is because i moved resently and i changed band classes.... well also she forgot that she is talking to a formal section leader......

Indeed, arrogance never drives us too far. Be pacient and your time will come up eventually. No word can substitute this way for you to change this situation: playing.

good luck,

That would make me very mad

I kinda know how you feel as i am 3rd chair, but both the two flutes in front of me hate solos, and id love to have one :P

We can "challenge" people if we feel that we are better than the person in front of us to move up. I think you should ask your director to do an audition in order for your chair placement. It would drive me CRAZY if i was placed last, especially in a situation like yours!

And if your music is like ours, there really is not a difference except everyonce in a while a divided part from the first and seconds.. but i guess it depends what music your playing..

This girl might not have understood that what she said came out in an insulting way. I've been the flute section leader for about five years now and it's always difficult to explain why parts are divided the way they are. It's not because poor players should be on second part, though; I don't agree with that. Second part is just as important as first and, whenever the director leaves it up to me to divide the parts, I always spread the stronger and weaker players evenly on the parts. Just because you're playing second part doesn't mean you're weak and no section leader/director should ever say otherwise.

Maybe talk with this girl and let her know what she said bothered you. Or speak with the director. But, if at all possible, brush it off your back and keep going! ^_^ You're not being snobbish: you're concerned.

Best of luck!
