its all a matter of preferences. gold flutes tend to be a bit higher on the money scale ($15,000 and higher) where as silver flutes tend to be a lot cheaper.

I have personally never played on a gold flute that I liked.

you may want to get a gold headjoint someday, that is what I have and like, you get the warmth of the gold with the brilliance of the silver, I met someone recently who has a gold powell with a platinum haynes headjoint..

at the end of the day, it is you and not the flute that will matter...

Go to thegalwaynetwork.com he played a tune using a silver, then a gold, and then a platinum flute, everybody listened, the end? absolutely no difference in the sound quality!!!! I would now prefer an instrument with a Britannie Silver head (denser silver than a sterling silver). But then thats my preference. The Yammie that I am playing on now is a sterling silver head.

For the 16 flutes demo by Galway.
Some are gold but as for which ones are platinum, silver, plated or whatever, it's anybody's guess right now.

Of course, a recording isn't always the best way to hear the real sound.

Dunno, he did'nt say, ya if it is the head, there must be some difference in the sound quality definitely which we can't hear from the downloaded MP3 at a bit rate of only 54kbps!

"Presumably he is using the same head for each?"

Not at all. Galway usually isn't one to be changing around heads with his flutes very much.
These are more than likely stock flutes of different types whith their original heads. ALthough, one head crown (#13) is obviously unusual.

what matters is that he is a great flute player with a signature sound...he would sound like himself on a Bundy...or maybe even a Simba...
