now i`m sure the syndrome is spelt wrong but w/e. i am a sax player 1st and a flute player 2nd and the 2 ways of holding the instrument r very different. *yes i have a point to this just hold up a second*. with saxophone it is a very loose fitting hand position. but with flute oin the other hand both hands r made to be in unnatural positions. coming up on the reason of this topic. i am devolping the first stages of carpultunels sydrome *sp w/e* which is not a serious disease but does sometimes require surgery. i warn u flute players out there to watch for a certain sign. make your hand point straight on your wrist.then bend it foward. your wrist should be more or less smooth. but if there is a bump at the top of your wrist which kinda feels like a bone u may need to take a break from practcing for a little while. i hope i helped u guys out. Peace

i understand about being strict during band. lol i am too :P. but but if that little bump is up u might want to find an easier hand position for your flute. its gonna make u look lazier but it will help. lol if u can. take a break from flute and practice tenor sax. *tenor sax ruled u pick good:P*

I think what you are asking about is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, a very common disease for people who perform repetitive motion work, or jobs such as typing, or mechanical jobs, but I can`t say that I have ever heard of flute players getting it, although that doesn`t mean they can`t, but usually flute players are not using the same muscles that you use when getting Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, that comes from making motions with your wrist not just holding the flute in an upright position.
You can look on Yahoo search for more information under Carpal Tunnel. I hope that helps.
