i play flute, and my band indtructor wants me to switch to a brass instrument.
i have to choose between trombone and the french horn.......i dont know what to do.
im nervus that playing a brass instrument will mess up my flute embouchure. i really want to play the trombone, but my friend says i should do the french horn......this is really confusing. and just in case your wondering, ive played flute for 4 years and ive gotten pretty good, i dont want to mess that up.

then dont do it. if you dont want to mess up your flute playing, theres no reason why any band director should force you into a new instrument.

"and my band indtructor wants me to switch to a brass instrument."

THey do this beacuse the often end up with too many of the high melody instruments and then they want some of them to move to the lower instruments. I don't blame them but if it were me, I wouldn't switch to a lower instrument. I like the fact that the flute is on top of the other, they play melodies very often and sometimes get to play some neat fills. As others have suggested, playing brass isn't so good for the flute embouchure. I this that you BD wants a total switch and doesn't care either way if you play flute again.

I'd tend to be stubborn, myself. If you are good, then redouble your efforts and pound on the first chair's spot and take it over.

But that's just me.

the french horn it pretty neat and i have heard the trombone is quite hard to learn the notes on, but you shouldn't switch just because your band director wants you to, heck if he wants you to switch you may want to consider some other musical activitys (or just offer to play a bass glockenspiele/xylophone they are easy to play and they woun't mess up your flute embourture) as a new flautist i know how hard it is to find the emborture(sp?) so unless he realy needs more brass players its not worth you spending money on learning to play a trombone or french horn when you could continue playing flute and just play the big glock/xylophone

It takes several years to get that sweet tone out of a flute, and after 4 years you probably almost there. That would be a terrible thing to waste. Don't do it! Don't let the band instructor pull you from where the flute if that is what you like doing! It would really be a sad waste of 4 years. I think also, brass will kill your lips and make playing the flute harder. I don't advise it if you want to pursue the flute seriously at all, like into High School and college or beyond.
