i was invited to perform the reinecke concerto with a local orchestra. this means that my old moldy copy from a house flood not too long ago is no long able to stand up to the challenge. the copy i did have was very old (from the 60s or so) and is no longer in print. i noticed that there are a few different versions available from flute world. two of which are over $20 and one which is about $11. my teacher said that she was unfamiliar with all three and that i should seek outside advice. i wont be able to view any of them so i guess im buying blindly. which version should i buy or does it really make a difference?

(Masters Publishing, $11.95)
(Amadeus Publishing, ed. Meylan, $21.95)
(Breitkopf & Hartel, ed. Wiese, $21.95)

I haven't looked at the various editions of that particular piece, but I'm pretty happy with other works I've gotten published by Breitkopf. They seem to do a good job of reproducing their music accurately, and in such a way that it's easy to read (as complicated pieces go). If I were forced to make the choice blind, I'd go with the Breitkopf. Of course, you might try calling Fluteworld and asking them what differences their are between the editions (aside from price).

I agree with Chris, Breitkopf is always easy to read and printed on the best paper...worth the extra $$

i ran into flute world on saturday and had a few minutes to spare (i had to run in and get a new bag... bought the altieri and love it) and they brought out all 3 versions. ended up buying the masters because it had the tutti parts written in whereas the other 2 didnt. so i ended up saving $10. but thank you for your help anyway!

:-)

How fun! I love buying flute accessories and music and... FLUTES!! I have never been to Flute World, but would love to go sometime. Glad you found and addition that works well for you. Good luck with it!

Did you get to try out any flutes? I knew that you were thinking about looking into another flute, that is why I ask.

no, i had to run in and literally run out (on my way to rehersal...) but im still looking to buy a piccolo (since i dont even own my own, how pathetic) and when i do, im going to try out a few flutes. i believe im going to just wait for my student loans to start coming in and putting away X amount of dollars from each installment and when ive reached a certain amount, selling my muramatsu and purchasing a flute with the money from that sale as well. it seems to be the most logical way to buy a new instrument with money being tight. that is, of course, if i do end up deciding to upgrade. i may end up buying a new headjoint instead and keeping the body i own now (although that would defeat the purpose of me wanting a new flute because of the inline g i currently have...)

by the way, flute world is a pretty dumpy place. it seems so glamourous online, but in all reality, its a split level building that needs some tlc. the floors are unlevel, the stairs are also unlevel, the practice rooms are horrendous and double as storage rooms... but thats ok because they carry some of the most intriguing items! i mean, where else can you find a pink plastic student case?
