I'd be tempted myself to pull out a nice piece of jazz or some quick Irish folk music.

That removes all doubt. Most beginning and intermediate flute players are pretty hopeless at these sort of timings and rhythms as well. (evil grin)

It's kind of like listening to to different people playing Banjo or Dulcimer. The better player is almost always immediately apparent.

who can mentain an f for the longest whilst cherping like a bird (had to add one)

i think it is a usless challenge i have started doing scales in my lessons (one octave) and they are the most boring bit of flute playing you will ever do but i would ask her to change it to qa nice peice of music that you both know, it does sound silly what she said about only getting a week when you've had since the beggining of the school year

Scales are only boring if you make them boring....Play them musically, and they become much more interesting. Considering the vast amount of music for flute that is based on scales and arpeggios, if you think scales are boring, you're probably not going to enjoy much of the repertoire either!

I, oddly enough, have always enjoyed scales for the challenge. They really help with sight reading (which I do a lot) and with on the spot transposing a piece that you are also sight reading (again, a common occurrence for me).

However, to the original poster, do you think your challenger actually knows these scales in three octaves? Have you heard her attempt these scales during band warm up? How is her upper range usually?

Well, I haven't heard her play the scales (she always practices them in the small practice room)
but according to my brother who spoke with her, she said she doesn't know them either. wow
other than that, when it comes to normal high range, she sometimes misses simple ones like Eb or F.

I'd still not play her game. She was lazy and didn't practice like she should, so don't let her get away with it.

I'd complain that it's not a real test of ability and instead, ask the teacher for a piece of music to play - with one catch: something you both don't know and have never seen. One week to learn it.

Yes, it's a bit risky, but I have no doubt you'd win.

I would have you both sightread something..especially something with difficult rhythm, in the real world, one has to be a very good sightreader

you know, I think she is starting to realise that the challenge is a waste of time.
Depending on what happens on friday, I will start to play piccolo!

You might want to start playing more piccolo anyway. Being proficient on the picc only opens more doors to you, and if you become a really skilled player, you can make some good money playing it. Plus, I think it's more fun than flute (That's just my opinion, though).

when I heard someone play piccolo, I didn't like it.
but now that I play it, it's awesome! and I think it is also more fun than the flute, but still like the flute better

IMHO, picc playing can only strengthen your flute playing, so go for it
