I have the opportunity of buying either of the above flutes for my wifes Christmas present as her last flute (a Buffet student flute) was damaged beyond economical repair in an accident a few weeks ago. She is purely self taught and I'm told can play to level 6? I have been told that the 311 is a intermediate step-up flute and that the 514 is a professional flute. I would like to purchase the 514 but I am concerned that the 514 would more difficult to play unless you had considerable experience. Any advice would be greatfully recieved especially from owners of either flute and/or teachers. Thank-you in advance.

It's a nice gesture, but don't buy her a flute unless she is given the chance to try it out first. A flute is a very personal instrument, and a good player won't like just any old instrument, no matter how well it is made. Give her a "coupon" of sorts redeemable for a new instrument, and take her to music stores/flute shows until she can try out the options that are available and choose the one that suits her best.
