i am able to blow up a balloon, but only with a lot of short breaths. ive done the "sssss" exercise with various people, im the first one out.

If there is actually significant air escaping nasally, then you'd be "out" of the /s/ game in less than two seconds.

If there is air escaping more intermittently you'd definitely hear a type of "grunting" noise in the back of the throat as it was happening.

The issue may possibly be air escaping, but you should probably look more into the various breathe control exercises that people here have referred to at various times.

before doing that, I suggest you visit the othorhinolaryngologist (sp?) and ask him/her advise about the problem.
