I wonder if they have been having quality issues.... |

I wouldn't be the least bit suprised. Even for the price I would still buy an Amrstrong or Emerson piccolo over one. Any of the Sonare piccs that I have tried I did not like at all and the mechanism was horrible on them.
One of the vendors and at the flute fair said that they couldn't get any or them in in time and that they were very popular with the army bands.
I ended up getting an Armstrong 308 piccolo for a backup to my wood as I know these are very reliable. I owned one for about four years before the purchase of a wood piccolo.

Here is what I found on kesslers music:
Sonare SP-500 Piccolo - Discontinued!!! -view pictures-
February 7, 2008 - Sonare Winds announced that they are discontinuing the SP-500 piccolo. This is largely due to recent quality control problems from their key manufacturer in China. Sonare is planning on releasing a newer version of the piccolo near the end of 2008 using a new Taiwanese manufacturing partner. New new Taiwan/USA model will be a new model number and will have a higher price.
HONESTLY I LOVED THE SONARE PICCOLO! GLAD I GOT ONE!!
