I am also in New Zealand and have just gone through the whole buying a flute thing. My experience was that on-line sellers won't send flutes for trial to NZ - if you want to try it you have to buy it first. That's a problem unless you really know what flute you want to buy.

Having said that, I did manage to buy a Yamaha 674 from a New Zealand company and am very happy with it. There are a few flute sellers mainly in Auckland who will send flutes for trial, but the choice is largely restricted to Yamaha, Pearl, Altus, Gemeinhardt, Muramatsu and Jupiter.
