I am starting to learn flute by myself. I would love to seek a recommendation from intermediate and expert flute players here what type of flute should I buy.
After some research, I conclude that I need covered holes type and Offset G options.
But how's about mechanism-E? Is it recommended to use flute with mechanism-E for beginner?
I am an adult with small fingers and have played recorders for long time.

Thanks in advance.

As a beginner-intermediate I agree with your choice concerning covered holes and offset G. I would add a C foot if you can avoid the omnipresent B foot nowadays.

My first flute (Gemeinhardt) had no split E and my newer, intermediate Yamaha does. I am afraid I cannot tell the difference. But I am still far from a high level, even from a true intermediate level. Sure you will get plenty of responses about this subject from more advanced and pro forum members..

I'd probably recommend starting with a closed hole C foot with offset G to start.

1. Closed hole helps you get your bearings on the instrument without adding another variable. I'm an adult intermediate/advanced player with small hands too. I play closed hole, open hole and keyless Irish flute (it's an everything open hole flute!) I find I gravitate to closed hole when I'm working technique as I don't have to struggle so much. My fingertips are so small that I have to really push to cover the holes on some models. I've found Gemeinhardt open holes have suited my finger issues. You may want to go the store and try some out. See what works best for your hands.

2. Offset G. From what I hear, it seems to be more a comfort issue than anything. My closed hole is an offset and my open hole is inline G. That's just how it worked out for me. I like the offset G best.

3. C or B foot. My closed hole has a C, my open has a B. One of my teachers doesn't care for B foot because she says it's heavier. I really don't notice the weight so much. I know a few professional musicians who are happy playing a C foot. I think it depends on your music style. I love low register, so I want every note I can get.

Hope that helps! I think you'll really like it once you get started! =)
