My sister-in-law wants to get a flute for her 9 year old daughter to start. She found the yamaha 225SII on craigslist and is taking me along to make sure its in good working order.

Can anyone tell me the reputation of this flute? I'm pretty sure it's the precursor to the 221, which seems to have a very good reputation. Also, are there any things I should really look for to make sure it's in good working order?

Thanks!

For a nine year old child... hmmm, wouldn't this be the case of buying one of those U shaped headjoint beginner flutes, like an Emerson or alike?

Thanks for the quick responses! They're actually selling it for under $200, so if it's in good working order, it should be a good deal.

I think 9 year olds can play a standard flute, at least I did when I started.

As far as my experience, I was in All State Band in High School, and while I didn't play in college (way too busy) I remember my scales. (good ole muscle memory) ^.~

Thanks again. I'm looking at it tomorrow.

my 9 year old sister played a standard flute (but then she gave up as she can't stick to things) so she should be fine (heck there are some 7 or 8 year olds on youtube who play them)
